The Boathouse is the perfect spot for laid back breakfasts, cosy coffees, delicious dining or simply drinks at the bar with friends. Our retractable roof for sunnier days means you can dine with us, al fresco while enjoying the wonderful, waterfront views.

Our Story

The Boathouse Café was founded by owner Ben Squire, whose lifelong passion for fishing began at an early age. At just 21, with the support of a £1,000 grant from The Prince's Trust, Ben bought his first fishing boat and launched a small business in Plymouth, running mackerel and deep-sea fishing trips. What started as a single boat and a big ambition has since grown into a thriving operation. Today, Ben owns a fleet of cruise boats, fishing vessels, and ferries, connecting the coasts of Devon and Cornwall.

Inspired by his love of the sea and fresh, locally caught seafood, Ben went on to create The Boathouse Café. Set within the historic arches that once housed his fisherman's stores, the space has been thoughtfully restored and brought back to life.

Now, The Boathouse is home to a bar, restaurant, and fish market - serving the freshest catch, much of it still landed by Ben's own boats.

Sustainability

We are a family run business and fishing runs through our veins! We care greatly about the ocean and fish stocks, after all the livelihoods of local fishermen like us and the future of the industry depends on us working together in harmony with our waters.

Our small inshore fishing day boats are all U15 metres in length and land to South West Ports; Plymouth, Brixham and Newlyn.

Our fishing methods combine a mix of potting, line fishing and responsible trawling. We work within strict guidelines, on approved fishing grounds. To ensure that protected areas are left untouched and the impact of our small fleet on the sea bed is no more than a strong storm.

Unlike large scale industrial fishing, our fleet and the methods we engage are selective and support local crews, migrant workers and the local economy.

We are members of Environment Plymouth and have a strict no single use plastic policy. We are proud to be plastic free, using biodegradable takeaway boxes, cups and paper straws and provide recycling bins to help our customers do their bit too!
